Screencast wish-list and suggestions

Hi everybody!

During these last weeks we've been putting some effort into the idea of
creating several screencasts for Cherokee.
You can check out the first one, a basic introduction to Cherokee-Admin,
at http://www.vimeo.com/7683565
Alvaro and I just got it up and running yesterday, and it seems to be
doing a good job spreading out the word about what Cherokee can do.
I've had a lot of help through private conversations from a lot of
people, specially giving sound editing tips, so thanks to everyone that
has given a hand on the matter.

The idea is to create a bunch of them and publish them all at once. Very
short, straight to the point tutorials (1-2min).

Any thoughts on what these screencasts should talk about? What *fairly
common scenarios* do you think would be appealing to the masses.
These should draw some attention to us, and very specific settings are
better looked up in our docs and mailing list.

For now, my list of priorities is this:
* How to deploy a Django application (a Flup variant is almost ready,
and one uWSGI variant is comming next).
* How to deploy a Rails app.
* How to deploy Wordpress
* Setting up video streaming with Cherokee

Please comment on the matter and help come up with new (and better)
subjects.

Could we do some localisation but also on the webinterface itself. So we
generate the SAME movie (as in clicks) but with a different translated
webinterface.

Then we could translate the video in sound as well.

It isn't that I'm against the idea or anything, localization is an interesting nice-to-have. However, I believe Taher was asking about ideas for the topic of the videos. Something more in the line of: "It'd awesome a video showing this, this and that feature." or "we could try to configure a Drupal site, Mailman, and the video streaming support within a 1 minute video".

Re: Screencast wish-list and suggestions [In reply to]

Hi Stefan ;-)

I guess it *can* be done, but just like with the docs, I think we should
target every PR effort to an English spoken audience and let the rest to
local communities. After all, it is the 'de facto' standard and it is
where most of our effort will give its rewards.

And this comes from a guy who isn't an English native nor extremely
proficient in the matter. I assure you it would be a lot easier for me
to do the audio recordings in Spanish. Glitches and mispronunciations
take up most of the time I spend with the screencasts. And despite my
efforts it is clear in the audio that neither I am a native nor my
English is above needing a lot of polishing.

But hey! You gotta work with what you've got ;-)

Or something like: how to report a bug for Cherokee ;)

Hello,

For the translation, I guess is better to work with subtitles.

Cheers,
Jonathan.

Re: Screencast wish-list and suggestions [In reply to]

Thanks for the hard work on the sceencast video - keep them coming.
Seemed good, although a lot of sound pauses and odd sound breaks when
I watched the video. Unsure if that's just my experience or something
with the video itself. Glad to give the video a watch again later to
confirm the pauses and such.

Unsure about the proper pronounciation of Cherokee in English. I've
always heard it here in the States as Chair-o-key. But the Cherokee
nation (Indians) are on the other side of the United States and thus -
my familiar pronounciation could be a regional way off one.

Aside from those two small points, I think it's good and encourage
more of these and figuring out how to similarly make some of the
Cookbooks and other How-To's available in same way. Video works often
much better for technical training purposes.

As for standardizing on English, it's unfortunately the defacto world
standard these days. That's sad in my opinion, but attempts should be
made to allow localization and translations where and when someone
wants to translate such.

We'll upload all the videos in different formats (H264, Theora and FLV), as soon as the new website reform is finished. Hopefully, that will help.

Excellent info. Unsure if the audio breakup is encoding related or
editing related. Glad to test the videos out more to see. Sometimes
it's CPU use with Flash or bandwidth misbehaving - so interested in
hearing if others experienced the same. All in pursuit of perfecting
things or testing features :)

Nice video :) Never saw that one before, nor had I heard the song. Be
it dated, it's a good history lesson coming from an unexpected
pop-band. It's an unfortunate part of our ugly American history that
has never been made right.

Perhaps Cherokee the web project can someday be something officially
recognized, endorsed by or adopted by the Cherokee Nation - that would
be poetic. I have a nagging suspicion the Cherokee Nation could use
some of our technical help to make technology more available and
accessible by their people. Unemployment and very low levels of
income have plagued the Cherokee Nation.

Here's a long information piece on the Cherokee people - worth reading:

FWIW, I recently found a great way to serve Ogg streams -either live
or from pre-recorded media- to users, minimizing the need for them to
install any plugins. It is still not 100%, but at least it works as
reliably as FLV-based players, and video tends to run smoother. Plus,
Theora's codec is way superior quality-wise to the low-bandwidth H264
ones.

http://itheora.org/

It is basically a piece of HTML+Javascript that displays the Ogg
directly using browser-provided facilities (i.e. newer Firefox
versions, machines where VLC is installed and "owns" the media
extensions) or a Java application (the Cortado Ogg player). I am
currently using it for this public page:

http://www.iiec.unam.mx/video/

I hope I can soon provide with links providing static content. You can
also watch it in action (and it is a great test case) at TheoraSea:

Come on! It is offtopic, but the above statement is non-sense. The only
thing that currently can beat h264 is Dirac... and maybe SNOW, if your
install base supports it.
