Re: Cherokee 0.99.27 released [In reply to]

When starting Cherokee I get to following error message:
[05/11/2009 17:38:43.102] (error) icons.c:184 - Duped suffix (case
insensitive) 'z', pointing to 'package.png'

Compiled it on openSUSE 11.1 with:
./configure
make
make install

I didn't get this error with 0.99.26.

Regards,
Walter

Getting the same error on our Ubuntu 9.04 servers:

That is a minor, harmless regression.
You can actually fix it from Cherokee-admin:

Icons -> Extensions -> package.png

Replace ",Z,z" by ",z". Extensions are compared in a case-insensitive
way, it does not make much sense to have a duped entry in that icon.

Re: Cherokee 0.99.27 released [In reply to]

Can we get this cleaned up for next release? Unsure why there would
be dupe suffix unless Cherokee made that on it's own in the past.

That also works on Windows!!

Again we publish the binary Windows version of cherokee-worker produced
with an out of the box cross compilation (GCC 4.4.2p1.0). We have
stripped it this time, that significantly reduces the binary size.

It's already clean in Cherokee 0.99.27. The issue is, your
configuration file does include the duped entry, and therefore,
Cherokee warns about it. Otherwise, you wouldn't know it's duped.

People installing a brand new Cherokee 0.99.27 without any previous
configuration file will not see the warning.

Re: [Cherokee-dev] Cherokee 0.99.27 released [In reply to]

Alright, I'll accept the responsibility to cleanup my old installation then.

Sorry to be a bother - ideally small things like this I'd enjoy seeing
Cherokee say at least how to fix it when such occurs. Something like
that doable perhaps? Preferably, small things like this shouldn't
prevent Cherokee from starting - in my opinion. They should be noted
for fixing and nothing more.

Thanks!

Of course! I couldn't agree more.

Future versions of Cherokee will work in that way, for sure. At the
moment, the best thing we can do is to continue improving the server,
one step at a time. You know, the perfect is enemy of the good.

Just remove the 'z' from the config.

Good news. Cherokee 0.99.28 will be the first version supporting the
automatic configuration migrations. The first change-set implementing the
feature already did it to trunk:

We do not need to modify our users' config files, right? (you say it
is a "harmless" regression - Can it be just ignored in case the user
does not notice?)

Ãlvaro, just in case you had any doubts on the matter... Every day you
gain a larger share of heaven. Just make sure there is still space
there for the rest of us! ;-)

Re: [Cherokee-dev] Cherokee 0.99.27 released [In reply to]

The .99.28 automatic configuration migration might create some
discussions about touching people's config files.

I am on the fence as to what is best way to handle malformed config files.

I believe ignoring errors in config files so Cherokee does run and
prompting the user with visual notice at runtime in Cherokee-Admin and
in relative logs with error and way to clean it up is likely the best
route.

One of my big gripes with Apache in the past is the ability to malform
config files and thus not be able to actually run it. This applies to
a lot of open source software and I run up against it regularly.
MySQL is another culprit with easy to malform config files.

Point is, especially since 90%+ or more of users are config'ing
Cherokee through Admin GUI is that the GUI should sanity check the
config data on the way in so Cherokee can always be ran. Final layer
of handling should be in Cherokee-worker - extraneous or duplicative
config data should be ignored but noted by worker.

That's the approach I'd take if possible. Insure Cherokee can always
run and deal with exceptions gracefully.
