I ran my tests as follows: (Same Ubuntu 9.04 for both tests. Running in a VMWare under Windows Server 2003 with a heavy load for Windows with Ubuntu running well above normal priority.)

C:\Apache228\bin\ab" -n 20000 -c 10 -v 1 -w -k http://raychorn-desktop:8080/index.html > run-ab-apache2a.html

"C:\Apache228\bin\ab" -n 20000 -c 10 -v 1 -w -k http://raychorn-desktop/index.html > run-ab-cherokee2a.html

Smallest HTML file possible with no images:

<html><body><h1>It works!</h1></body></html>

I noticed the CPU was hitting 70% for Cherokee so there may be some issues for the Cherokee dev team.

This is not enough for me to switch to Apache2 for now because I like the lower RAM footprint for Cherokee and the ease of use however if my needs change I may look into Apache2 again.

For Cherokee:

This is ApacheBench, Version 2.0.40-dev <$Revision: 1.146 $> apache-2.0

Are you seriously "benchmarking" against localhost?
