So, I'd written up a great big long comment to this a couple weeks ago, but never got around to posting it. In short, my suggestion was to create a generic import/export function for bricolage, exposed via both the UI and SOAP service. I mostly figured out the UX storyboards in my head (which may solve the usability/practicality issues alluded to above), and think it could be a great feature. Should I submit that as a new feature request and see what people think? It would obviously be a ways off, but could be wicked useful.
