alsa-kmdl FC13

Hi,
can I just check if the kmdl for ALSA is still required?

The last one I have is : alsa-kmdl-2.6.34.9-69.fc13

Your hardware was sometimes the deciding factor in whether you needed a
kmdl or not. New stuff reached the kmdls quicker. In f14 with the
current 2.6.35.14-97 kernel I only have nvidia and yum kmdls installed
and see/hear no problems.

Previously I had v4l installed, but that kmdl appeared a few hours later
than the nvidia one. I tried the kernel upgrade without it and it seems
I don't need it.

Well, F13 has gone EOL for while now, so the most correct answer is
"upgrade to F14/F15/CentOS6". :)

Other than that, if your system works find w/o a kmdl then you probably
do not need it! This goes even for nvidia - if you are fine with nouveau
(e.g. just doing business applications on the system in question), why
use nvidia kmdls?

No, most probably not. F15 should have alsa-driver 1.0.24 already
included unless there were some parts that didn't make it to the kernel.

In general, try w/o and if you are dissatisfied for some reason
check /proc/asound/version and then alsa-project.org to see if you are
running the latest alsa. If you are (like F15 currently does) it is
still worth while to check whether there are patches for your problem
that could be part of the kmdl (which there are a very few).

These are the general instructions for dealing with out-of-the tree
drivers, e.g. external drivers as packaged in kmdls. The neat thing
about kmdls is that you can easily install and deinstall them. So when
in doubt you can just check whether the kmdls make a difference.
