mythtv - can't start setup or frontend

well, my old reliable myth server crapped out a couple of days ago.
i thought i'd just set it up on my current desktop box. and it's not
going well. somehow, i just know that all the myth folks around here
are going to know how to get me going again, said ole john feeling all
soooo hopeful. :-)
when i try to crank up either mythtv-setup or mythfrontend, they just
hang with empty windows. no text, no buttons, no icons.
does anyone know how to get past this problem?
