MythTV bijou feedback wanted

MythTV bijou feedback wanted

The bijou set of MythTV packages has been out for almost five months
now. I'd like feedback on how it's worked for you.

* Do you use it for VDPAU, or another reason? If the latter, what?
HDHomerun multirec, perhaps?
* How is its stability compared to non-bijou versions?
* Which other available patches would you like to see in it?

A bonus question:

* Do you plan to upgrade to 0.22 when it comes out, or stick with
0.21?

I used it for VDPAU and HDHomerun multirec patches.

It has been completely stable for me. No issues of any kind that I
didn't have with .21.

Yes, I do plan on upgrading to 0.22 when it comes out...once it has been
out for a month or so and the glaring problems have been resolved.

I too am using the bijou Mythtv packages. My initial interest was
based mostly on the VDPAU functionality, but I also became interested
in the multi-rec capabilities for use with my HDHR when I realized it
was included in these packages. With VDPAU my interest was mostly for
"proof of concept". I have a couple of frontends with VDPAU capable
NVidia graphics adapters. However, these frontends also have more
than enough horsepower to playback HD without VDPAU (at least this is
true of the HD recordings I have). I really just wanted to see what
all the fuss was about, and I have been truly impressed with its
performance. As far as multi-rec, unfortunately I haven't been able
to get it working yet. (I posted about it a month or so ago).
However, I will say that any issues I have with this functionality are
mostly, if not wholly, self-inflicted. First, I only deleted my HDHR
tuners, not all my tuners, after installing the bijou packages. But
more importantly I found that somewhere along the line I let the bijou
packages get "upgraded" back to the normal ATrpms mythtv packages
because I don't have the "testing" repo enabled by default. This
being the summer the amount of new recordings has gone way down for
me, while time spent doing other things besides watching TV has
increased, so I really haven't had the time or motivation to
troubleshoot further. I eventually hope to get it going.

As far as stability, I have had no problems with either my front-ends
or back-end that I would attribute to the bijou packages.

The only other "wish list" feature for these packages would be to be
to be able to use my HD-PVR. I have had one basically sitting around
doing nothing since right after it was released.

For the bonus question I would say as soon as 0.22 is officially
released and the packages become available in the ATrpms repos I will
be upgrading.

In any case, I thank you, Axel, and all other involved parties for
making these packages available.

Hi: I use 'bijou' on my fc10 Core2 nVidia 7500LE box. I also have a
CentOS 5.3 P4 GeForce4 box using 0.21 fixes. An early attempt to
install 'bijou' on that failed because the nVidia hardware was
incompatible with the required 180 series driver. The boxes are
independent; all they share is an antenna providing SD DVB-T (and
analog, which I don't use). Mostly I watch on the system monitors,
although both boxes can feed an old 26-inch 100 Hz CRT TV. I don't use
the P4 box much now but when I do it still seems competent.

So neither box uses VDPAU, HDHR, Apple Trailers or the other goodies set
out in Yeechang's introduction to the packages. I tried bijou primarily
because Axel recommended it, and also because Yeechang's selection of
patches looked as if it was aimed at making a usable system now rather
than advancing towards the Holy Grail. Perhaps the most noticeable
difference, without VDPAU, is the lack of the 1 second disk pulse during
recording.

I haven't seen any differences in stability that could be attributed to
bijou; most have been part of the evolution of fc10. And I think there
have been significant improvements in both bijou and fixes; for example,
I haven't recently had a hangup after a jump in DVD playback.

I suppose when 0.22 arrives I shall want to try it. Ideally I'd like to
provide feedback early, but to be effective that requires a committment
that I would prefer not to make. Perhaps I ought to try trunk on the P4
/CentOS box soon - but that still won't have VDPAU. I don't intend to
progress to FC11 just yet.

My experience looks pretty much the same as most others that have
responded. I used it to proof out VDPAU with a fairly low-power CPU
(E7200) and integrated graphics motherboard on a single frontend. So
far, things are working exceptionally well for me and I expect to
upgrade to 0.22 as soon as it looks stable.

Thanks for all the work to bring this to 0.21.

I came across this thread, searching for a bit of info on VDPAU. I use the
mythdora installation, but I did build MythTV on a box by myself once. I
found that to be a good learning experience, but having the whole distro
packaged up was too easy. I'm a new subscriber to ATrpms-users, so please go
easy on me if I've violated protocol. I do know that MD 5 used the ATrpms
repo, and now they're doing the RPMFusion thing.

I just wanted to say "thanks". I haven't tried it yet, but I think I will.

That said, I'm willing to give building another machine a shot. I have a
couple of machines that aren't quite powerful enough to do some of the
playback unassisted (Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, AMD Athlon 64 3000+). So, I
replaced them with a build of MythDora 10.21 on an E7400 with an 8600 GT.

I have a 9500 GT that I'd like to use with the P4 3.0 GHz as a separate
frontend, I'm thinking that it'd be a good opportunity to give VDPAU a go.

The Athlon 64 3000+ is in a 939/AGP motherboard, and I'm not sure if I'd
rather just stick with the FX5200 that's in it now and make it a backend or
try a PCI VDPAU-capable card in it what.

I have two HVR-1250 tuners that use OTA, but I've considered the HDHomeRun.
I guess MultiRec would be cool, but I've not come into a situation where I
thought that it'd work better than just buying an additional Tuner. My E7400
box has 4 PCIe x1 slots, two PCI slots and, of course a PCIe x16 slot. I
claim ignorance on that.

Whether I upgrade to 0.22 probably depends on how badly I mess up my box
trying to get VDPAU. I don't have any real timeframe for 0.22 to release in
any official capacity, but I want VDPAU, like, *now*. If I get "good enough"
at building a box on my own, setting up all the little details and such, I
guess I'll just tear down and rebuild with 0.22 when the time comes. I doubt
that'll happen, so I'll probably wait for an easy upgrade path, or nuke the
install and go back to a pre-packaged setup with 0.22 if there isn't an easy
way to upgrade.

Hope that gives you an extra data point. If not, it's just a long-winded
"Thanks".

I accidentally pulled in the bijou packages after building a CentOS
box recently. Atrpms-testing was enabled so yum pulled in the bijou
packages.

The setup in my house is an underpowered one, with a combined BE/FE
running on a Celeron 1.3Ghz and 512MB Ram. While recording two shows
(PVR-350 and PVR-150) mythbackend consistently ate up almost all the
memory and began to swap, rendering the machine unusable.
One other issue I had was that mythfrontend would crash after changing
a channel in LiveTV.

Both of the issues above were resolved when I went back to the
official .21-fixes in atrpms. Obviously, bijou is meant for system
that can handle the RAM stress related to the patches you have
incorporated, and my system can't really take advantage of bijou
anyway. When I upgrade to HD eventually, I will probably move to bijou
or .22 if it's out by then.

So this post is really more of a warning to those who want to use
bijou on an underpowered system. Make sure that you have enough RAM.

I'll probably wait a few weeks and upgrade to .22

Yes, this is due to the much-larger ThreadedFileWriter buffer sizes
the package uses. It significantly improves mythbackend's ability to
handle the stress of multiple recording streams (no way my setup could
simultaneously record four high-definition MPEG2 streams at once
without them) , but at a much-higher RAM cost.
