1: kernel choice by synaptic.Ā 2.Ā Do I need the -BOOT kernel?

My RH9 system has 256 Mb of memory. When I updated by synaptic to the
new saa7134 TV package the system chose to download and install the
bigmem and BOOT versions of the kernel.

kernel-bigmem-2.4.20-30_37.rh9.at
kernel-BOOT-2.4.20-30_37.rh9.at

The RH9 customization guide says that bigmem is appropriate for systems
with more than 4 Gb of memory. Do I lose anything provided by the
normal i686 kernel if I use the bigmem version? Is it _really_ required
by the saa7134 package?

After the update synaptic didn't report, as it had before, that multiple
versions of the kernel were installed. I have uninstalled all except
the bigmem version above.

Should I take some action with the -BOOT kernel? RH9 Package List says
it's 'used on installation boot disks', but I presume that my emergency
boot 'disk' (if I could make one for use with my memory-card equipped
system) would use the initrd file in /boot. I had been hoping that the
RH9 bootable CD would get me started, but haven't yet tried it.

The "BOOT" kernels are there because the XFS kernels are, often, not small
enough to fit onto a floppy. They're not necessary for booting from your
hard drives, but if you want to create boot floppies, in case your boot
sector goes to heck, they're not a bad idea.

That is an issue with the current package resolvers (apt/synaptic,
yum, etc.), that find that a kernel of version X is required, but can
choose out of a variety of several flavours (normal, smp, BOOT,
bigmem, etc.). The end effect is a randomly chosen kernel.

Therefore try to install kernels and kmlds explicitly, e.g.

apt-get install saa7134-kmdl-2.4.20-30_37.rh9.at
(which would install the "normal" kmdl and the matching kernel)

Please install a new kernel/kmdl pair as above, boot into the new
kernel and optionally remove kernel-bigmem like

apt-get remove kernel-bigmem
