How’s this for a “hypothetical”?

For the sake of argument, let’s pretend that you ran a popular blog that covered local sporting events. Let’s also assume that every time the local team was playing, you found your site flooded with traffic.

Now, we’re not talking about average traffic spikes here; we’re talking “slow the servers to a snail’s pace” loads. Clearly, this wouldn’t be the kind of challenge your (otherwise very capable) shared hosting company could help you with; it would, however, be the perfect task for our WordPress for Enterprise services.

What we’d probably do

First, we’d start to dig around and see what the problem was. If it were hardware, we’d certainly be more than equipped to attack that. If, on the other hand, it turned out to be a software issue, we’d have plenty of options as well.

Perhaps we’d work with the site’s internal IT team to migrate the highest trafficked blogs to dedicated installs; we might optimize the layout and caching; or, we could reduce load through the creation of custom templates for mobile devices while customizing caching needs around high-traffic areas.

Is that all?

Of course not! We aren’t the sort of team that’s easily pleased. In order to squeeze out some more performance, we’d get deeper into the code, deleting extraneous WP plugins, removing leftover template tags, cleaning up the CSS and core html, reducing the number of includes, installing custom caching tools, and developing tailored solutions for dealing with cache refreshes.

Sounds like a lot of work, right? Well, it’s almost exactly what we did for the folks at LoHud, who kept getting slammed when their local team (the Yankees) won a game.
