Report Dead Links Script - Where?

Report Dead Links Script - Where?
I use the report dead links script in my links directory and find it to be very useful.

We're moving to a new server and the script isn't working. I was trying to find the info on the script to help me find it but I can't locate it in the resource center. This is a very good script, so I'd really like to find it again.

Can somebody tell me where to find a copy of the modification?

I'm getting all kinds of CGI errors. We were on a Raq, and I think I had to customize some of the stuff to work on it. Now we're moving to a regular server and I'm getting some odd errors.

I thought it would be easiest to just re-install the script from scratch, and debug it as I went, that's why I'm trying to find it again...

check out the one at wiredon.net. I used glennu's for a while, but this is a better one.

I checked it out, installed it on a test database and it does work. The bad news is that I don't like it. :(

My old had a place for folks to leave comments and it didn't check if the link was broken before letting you post. That's a good thing, since sometimes url's still work, but aren't what they used to be.

As an example one of the links on my site was to the port of tuscon. Now that same url works just fine, and takes you to a filthy porn site with about 10 pop-up ads. Luckily, one of my members used the report broken link form to tell me about.

So, we're back to my old question, where can I find the original report dead/broken link script?

Don't have the answer to your question, but here's some thoughts:

Go with Paul's mod (wiredon), and change the code as you want. It's a nice script, uses templates, send you an email, and keeps a record of what was reported. You can stop the part that checks the URL, and maybe only the part that stops the report if the link is good (still check and identify 404's, etc). Also, you can add a comment field to the form, there's a great step-by-step for that around here somewhere... (Okay, try here: http://www.online-sweepstakes.com/...s-mods/comments.html) If you opt to stop the URL checking, then in addition to the comments field, you could add a checkbox area with a "what's wrong with this link" title.

sound's like glennu's might work for you: http://mir.spaceports.com/~glennu/linkdead2.html

For paul's,I added a comment field, contact name and other pertinent info and showed the site name/URL on the html page. Modified the report.cgi to pass along the comment and the other fields I had previously added. Even modified the report.cgi to send the link owner an email in place of the person reporting the link ( why do they need a email ? ). But you manually have to delete the data from the deadlink file.Frown

This has really been a giant step in the right direction for "deadlinks." First, it cut down on the number of incorrect deadlinks being reported - Many were OK when I got around to checking them. And eliminated the duplicate reportings. And maybe more importantly, the linkowner automatically got a email copy. I could not use glennu's to do this since the site could actually be OK. And I have gotten excellent response from the linkowner.

Of all the mods I have done, adding paul's deadlink reporter, may have been one of the best moves I made. But everyone has a different situation, so something else may be better for you.
