Little app for adding Altavista search results into Links
Hi all !

After so much discussion i have made a little application to transfer Altavista search results into Links. If someone is interested please email me privat. If more than only one is interested i can make some additions for supporting different systems or additional search engines.

Alex has already made one, you ...

Or do you mean that you made an app that puts the results of a search into the database of links? Or that the results are diplayed together with the link results?

Let me know,

Why use mail if you have an UltimateBB

I mean a application that makes a query on Altavista - Then you can verify the hits and post them into links. All from one point :-)

Why use mail:

Because here is not the right place for discussion about programs like Link-Add.

I just got the file which happens to be an execute file (link-add.exe). I am afraid to run it because it may be a virus of some sort. You just never know these days with so much news coverage on computer viruses and hackers trying to ruin your holiday spirit. I will just have to trash it until someone here can really convince me that it's a program that can do wonders.

Perl-based scripts are the way to go!

John

An .exe file for something that should be non-compiled?

I have to agree, please use caution before running a program.

No offense intended Dominique, but you have only posted 3 messages on this forum, and all three are on this thread.... So I can't really back you as a credible source. To the Links users, I would not recommend using this program.

Take it with a grain of salt Smile

No problem for me ....

Use it if you like - if not trash it.
If you prefer i can create a code-signed
ocx that did the same.

If you still have problems, i send you the source code ... all you need is Delphi 4 to compile.

Just one quick note, some of our providers do not allow us to use complieded programs on the server, i think perl would be better.

I used the program, and it didnt have any virus on it(at least that's that Icona Antivirus said) How erver my computer messed up pretty bad, I have an Acer with a 233 MMX enchanced procceror, and 32 MB of Ram, I use to programms running in the background resource meter(one that comes with win95)and the antivirus, It ran great and was looking like it was a cool program, then all of a sudden my system resources dropped to 12% I couldnt do anything, then they go down to 9% I couldnt even shutdown shut down the computer, I think its in that add deal you got, cause it was working fine till it tried to change adds on me,
Thanks

I'm trying to write somthing simerler to what Dominique has wrote, execpt its in Perl, its a hack of Alex, script that searched AlstaVista, its kinda hard to explain, but it will use frames to hyperrefresh your add.cgi(that has been modified you don't want to get hundreds of email from your self) I still like quite abit to go, and theres alot I like, I tested searching computers, and got about 500 added in about 1 1/2 hours. If your interested in it let me know.
Thanks

I actialy did about 7 searches all computer related, added some from each results, and put them in a fake database to test it. As far as the results here is how the program works.
1. you go to the program.
1.a it brings up a form
1.b enter your your keywords/any funtion that Altavista has will work.
1.c hit enter.
2. It get's the results and writes them to a file simmerler to your links.db
3. You are then meta refresehed into frames to a mini admin script, to anser a few qustions like whether to accpect this links, to trim down the database and to go to the nph-verify.cgi
4. After you have trimed down the database you will be once again brought down in frames where it meta tag refress to your add .cgi file.
Thanks

For those of you that are worried about Dominique's program it has no virus from what I can tell, other that the crashing problem it is a very good program, well wriiten, just has a few bugs in it. When Dominique can get this fixed I would definaly use it for your Links database, the reason it's a .exe file is that you can save your results for anther time, its own mini built in bwroser, and more, You can start at any result like say you didnt wont the first 50 links then just tell it to start at 51, Perl is an asowm program but can not handle evything, I would imagion that's why Dominique wrote this program in a Windows(R) program.
Thanks

Joey,

when you say it added 500 links in 1 1/2 hours, what types of links did you add? everything that is listed in altavista when you search for computers or somthin like that?

I would really like to get a chance to try this program of yours. What would interest me a little more though would be to be able to search other engines as well. If this can be encorporated or a if I could get the code It sounds like this would be awesome.

Thanks for all the help.

Well folks I just gave this little program a try and seems to work pretty well at getting the links. No viruses according to McAfee and Norton. I have not been able to figure out how to get it to post the results or to get it to get anything off of Excite. Once a few of the bugs are worked out it should be a pretty kewl new app.

Thanks for all the help.

Not for me.

For myself, I would rather have surfers add their link manually for 4 reasons:

1) You can check their content, category selection and edit the information more carefully. (take out caps and exclamation marks, etc), thereby increasing the quality of your directory.

2) You get their email address for future mass mailings or newsletter ads.

3) You give them the opportunity to provide the required link back reciprocal url to your site, thereby increasing your traffic.

4) Higher traffic = more money from sponsors, etc.

What good is having 8000 links in your database if only maybe 50 link back? I would rather have all 8000 sites linking back to my home page.

Just a suggestion.
