Altavista Mark 2.

Altavista Mark 2.
Hi,

I've updated the Altavista script at:

http://gossamer-threads.com/...s/misc/altavista.cgi

The problem with the toolbar was that altavista doesn't search past 200 hits, so I cut off the toolbar at 19.

I've also turned off the display messages. I created this purely as an academic experience, please don't steal other peoples work! I hope the script does give you some ideas of how to get information off the web though.

Enjoy!

Hi Lucas

You need to put an index.html page for your directory or redirect people to /wl

Olá volpi!

Meu site não está pronto ainda. Todo o conteudo no diretorio "wl" é ainda experimental.

Estou montando um sistema de busca baseado no sistema de busca Xavatoria e com algumas mudanças no Links 1.1.

Olhe: http://www.weblinker.he.com.br/cgi-bin/query

Não possuo muitos sites cadastrados, mas para você ver os resultados, tente procurar por : www

Are you sure this will have no problem?
I dont want to be taken to court.
Any statement or notice taking about this issue? Thanks

Alex, the script still has a little bug.
In the result page, if you turn to page 2 the link no. are 21,22,23. This links no. should be in page 3, try to go back to page 1, the link no. are 11,12,13. But the correct link no. should be 1,2,3,4.

Ola Lucas,

Agora entendi.

Actually, Altavista would love you to use metasearch scripts on their database, as long as you do one thing: display their ads. Altavista has approved many programs that do this, notably Metacrawler, Savvysearch, Dogpile, and local programs like Infoseek Express (many of these only give Altavista a random chance of showing their banner).

Anyway, adding an altavista banner to that script only requires that you stick the following code into the output page:

<table border=0 width=600 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=2 bgcolor=#ffffff><tr><td><table width=100% bgcolor=#ffffff cellpadding=5 cellspacing=0 border=0><tr><td><center><iframe src="http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/altavista.digital.com/result_front;kw=$query_q" width=470 height=84 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0 hspace=0 vspace=0 frameborder=0 scrolling=no bordercolor="#000000"></iframe>
</td></tr></table></td></tr></table>
<table border=0 width=600 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0><tr><td>

And you have a nice, ethical addition to your Links script.

Oh, no, there's nothing illegal about getting results from AltaVista in the first place. Just as someone with a browser can access the page, you're accessing it and then reformatting it a little. Many programs, both web-based and PC programs, do this... examples are Copernic and Dogpile, both of which search multiple engines and don't display their ads. Anyway, AltaVista would be grateful to you for increasing their ad impressions! Of course, you must put a disclaimer on the page saying that the results were imported from AV, but I'm assuming you'd do that anyway.
