I will be putting up a DB with around 12,000 records (Laserdisc Movie Database). What's the max for DBMAN or if no max, what is the max with an acceptable load on the CGI and acceptable response time. Thanks.

The number of records is not the factor that you should be concerned about, but the size of your database file (default.db). DBMAN can run smoothly with a database file that does not exceed 1 MG. If you think that your database will exceed this amount in the future, then you should think about purchasing a license for the SQL version of DBMAN.

The size of your database file will depend on a variety of factors, including:

1) Number of fields for each record.
2) Length of fields in terms of data.

For example, we use DBMAN for the following databases:

1) Class Schedules
# of fields: 17
Average Length of Maximum Characters: 20
# of records: 533
Size of Database File: 78K

2) Job Hotline
# of fields: 17
Average Length of Maximum Characters: 500
# of records: 20
Size of Database File: 49K

3) Employee Directory
# of fields: 15
Average Length of Maximum Characters: 50
# of records: 296
Size of Database File: 24K

Some other projects I am working on using DBMAN have the following specs:

1) Bibliographic Database
# of fields: 12
Average Length of Maximum Characters: 1000
# of records: 181
Size of Database File: 181K

2) Products Database
# of fields: 15
Average Length of Maximum Characters: 15
# of records: 200
Size of Database File: 54K
