Host suggestions?

Host suggestions?
Looking for a new hosting option - anybody have a recommendation?

Needing....

Bandwidth: 15 - 30 GB (currently hitting 10 GB a month and with a new project I expect it to increase by 25% ~ 50%)

SQL 2000: 50 - 75 MB storage space

Other:
  • Web storage...approx 350 MB
  • .net / ASP
  • DSNs: 5 to 10
  • Solid e-mail server
  • Mirror domains: up to 6
  • Sub domains: 1 to 5 (with unique IP's upon request)
  • Good stat package/access to logs.
  • Good Web Console

In house tech support or reliable 3rd party support.

Site content would make for a pretty good PR opportunity to an ambitious hosting company.

You should post at the WHT forum, they have a special section for such requests:

Sounds like you are looking for more than shared hosting.

Ever thought about going dedicated?

His specs are still within the limits of virtual hosting. There's also the option of a "virtual private" server.

Thanks for the reminder about that site, my old user login was even still good.

I posted but I'm not holding my breath on a good reply. Most of the traffic seems oriented toward PHP/mySQL packages hosted on some teenager's reselling program. But you never know.

Thanks,

Is SQL 2000 essential?

Yep, but the requirements are rarely found with shared hosting packages.

That much bandwidth with mirrors/sub-domains is more in the realm of dedicated servers.

Also you'd probably end up paying a similar amount to get your own dedicated server.

I am sure it must be a good feeling to have your own box, Paul! I hope to reach that virtual, sorry, dedicated heaven before summer! Wink

Certainly is. Even better when you get an extra 250mhz at no extra charge Blush

No need for a dedicated server for such requirements.

Perhaps not, but it is an option.

Yes, I suppose it's always an option. In fact, just got an email in my inbox now from GT about their new dedicated hosting plans. Now that's another option :-)

How's yours going? You still having fun?!

BTW; you're sig is a bit misleading. when i first looked at it I thought you were refering to any site errors on the GT site.

AMD DURON 1GHz
512MB RAM
20GB Hard Drive
Ensim WEBppliance LS 3.0
300GB Monthly Transfer
$99

If you figure bandwidth at $2.50/GB, $750 worth of bandwidth is included.

Or they are selling bandwidth at $0.33/GB and throwing in the hardware, support and colocation costs for free AND making a profit giving all this away.

Instead of asking "is this cheap", maybe the question should be "is this too cheap"?

...and if you look they rip you off with the setup fee and also most say "Sold Out"

I imagine if you ask about the sold out packages, credit card in hand, they may have a "special for you, today only".

Rackshack appears to a favorite thread regarding net abuse and spam from a Google search.

And they made the "censored" list at webhostingtalk.com.

Do you work for them?

....I don't know how you/they can provide a good service or even make a profit with those prices. Please tell me where you/they can get bandwidth for about 60 cents per GB Laugh

Might be a nice package for somebody else, but comes no where near meeting my listed requirements.

Re: [jgkiefer] Host suggestions? In reply to
I personally don't like LiquidWeb much. I was with them for just under 4 months, and everything was not very good.

For starters they use CPanel 4. This gave me a hell of a time cos it seemed to be tracking the log files as my webspace. The thing that topped it all was that I didn't have appropriate permissions to delete them! This meant that my 50Mb space soon filled up...and even after loads of emails to them I still didn't get them deleted. In the end I moved.

Another one was getting Net::FTP and some other modules installed. I asked for them for about a month, and only just got them installed as I was leaving.

Well, just my opinion Tongue
